No one likes sudden, unexpected noise when browsing, but some sites still have autoplay. Fortunately, the browser makers have added a few simple ways automatically mute sound when opening a tab in Chrome and Firefox.
If you are a Chrome user
Chrome has a built-in blacklist. If you want to mute certain sites (for example, annoying autoplay videos), you can right-click on the site tab and select "Mute Site".
But if you want something more powerful, that is, mute all tabs by default and whitelist them - you can do this starting with version 64, the stable build of which was released in January.
Click the main menu button (three vertical dots) in the upper right corner, then "Settings". Click the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen.
In the "Privacy & Security" section, click on "Content Settings". Click Sound.
The default value for "Allow sites to play sounds" allows you to play sound from every site on the Internet, whether you visit it or not. To change this, click on the switch. If you really want to disable all audio, you can add exceptions to this rule by clicking Add next to the Allow section.
But most users will probably prefer to turn on the main option and add sites to the Silent list. Just enter any URL, then click Add.
Now when you visit this site or open a new tab from a link, all audio (including autoplay videos) will be muted. Enjoy the silence.
If you are a Firefox user
At the time of this writing, Firefox has released version 58 of "Quantum". It does not have the same built-in mute options as in latest version Chrome, but there is an extension you can use, it's pretty much the same. , then click Add to Firefox, then Add in the pop-up window.
Then click the main menu button, three horizontal bars, in the upper right corner of the window. Click Add-ons.
In the MuteLinks section, click Settings.

Some years ago Google chrome became the first browser in which special indicators appeared on the tabs, allowing the user to quickly navigate and understand which tab is making a sound. Other web browsers, including Firefox, Opera, and even Yandex Browser, have gone a little further here: for nicknames, the sound indicator is clickable. Muting audio in future versions of Chrome

This is useful if a tab is starting to play music or video and you want to temporarily mute the sound on it. In most cases, this requires a click or two.
Google chrome
To mute the sound on a browser tab in Google Chrome, simply click on the speaker icon that appears on the tab that is playing audio. You will see a line through it and the tab should be silent.
If that doesn't work, then open the Chrome flags page. To do this, enter in the address bar chrome: // flags / and press Enter. Here find the "Tab audio muting UI control" flag and enable it.
Alternatively, you can right-click on a tab and select Mute Site, which will mute all future tabs from that site.
Mozilla Firefox
To mute audio on a browser tab in Firefox, right-click the tab and select Mute Tab. As in Chrome, you will see a crossed-out speaker icon to the left of the "x" button in the browser tab.

Apple Safari
In Safari on Mac, you can mute a tab in several ways. While the currently active tab is playing audio, a speaker icon will appear in the Safari preferences panel. Click on it to turn sound on and off for the tab.
You can also right-click on any tab and select “Mute Tabs,” or simply left-click on the speaker icon that appears on the right side of the tab.
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge also displays a speaker icon in browser tabs when that tab is playing audio. However, there is no way to mute the sound on a tab from Edge.
However, there is a way to mute the sound in individual tabs in the Edge browser. To do this, right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area at the bottom right of the screen and select Open Volume Mixer.
Scroll to the right in the Volume Mixer window and find the Edge browser tab that is playing audio. Various browser tabs will be displayed here. Click on the speaker icon below the page title to mute the sound.

The sound control icon appears the moment you find yourself on a page where it appears in the content. On the tab of such a page, on the right, next to its name, an icon with a sound icon (horn) immediately appears. When the mouse approaches, the icon is highlighted. Sound control is simple - click on it if you want to mute the sound. The sound icon will be crossed out. To turn on the sound, you need to click again.
How to enable mute in Google Chrome browser
Chrome suggests the ability to turn on / off the sound in the settings. Finding the appropriate setting is not easy, but anything is possible. So, from the browser menu (three vertical dots on the right, in the upper part of the control panel), select the "Settings" section, write "sound" in the search box, get a link to "Content settings". You can go straight to the "Content Settings" if you know where to look for them. They are located in the "Advanced" settings, the link to which is at the bottom of the general list of settings. Among other numerous content settings, we find "Sound", and then you can enable or disable its playback, while making exceptions from the general rule set for individual sites. The task is not solved as quickly as in Yandex Browser, but fundamentally. But clicking on the sound icon on the page tab in the Chrome browser is useless. It won't affect anything.
How to enable mute in Mozilla Firefox browser
Here again, everything is solved quickly and situationally, as in the Yandex Browser. Only the icon with the "sound" icon will be located to the left of the page name on its tab and it is clearly visible only if you move the mouse cursor over this place. And when the cursor is far away, you can see something else instead. For example, the favicon of the page being viewed. Hover the mouse over, click on the "sound" icon and turn it on or off as needed.
The mute option is handled differently in each browser. In Mozilla, for example, you need to imagine in advance where to move the mouse cursor in order to be able to get to control it. In other cases, the control is obvious.
if it is important for you to be able to quickly turn on / off the sound, use Mozila or Yandex Browser. Click on the appropriate icon and you're done. Minus, the setting cannot be checked in advance. In what state it is, it becomes clear only when the page is launched, if the speed of turning on and off the sound is not critical, use Chrome. Here you can leave the sound on your favorite pages, turn it off on those where you do not want to hear it.
And last but not least, sound playback can be controlled using the Windows panel. In the lower right part of the screen there is an icon that makes it possible not only to turn on / off the sound, but also to adjust its volume. By the way, be sure to check that the sound is turned on at the Windows level before controlling it in the browser. If you don't see any results from sound controls in your browser, it might just be turned off. By and large, control the sound through Windows panel may turn out to be more convenient than through the “sound” icons, which can be found in Mozile and Yandex Browser.
