Scheme of a radio station vector w 27 comfort

And so, I'll tell you how I am about the wonderful Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio station. One of the few civilian radio stations that does not require emergency modification out of the box. The same cannot be said about the majority of MegaJet radios. But each person has their own preferences and their own delusions. So, for example, after a simple modification with a file, a soldering iron and hands, MegaJet turns into an excellent radio station ready for work and defense! But today we will talk about the Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio station.

This radio station has several characteristics that interested me:

  • Ascetic design,
  • reliable fastening of the tangent,
  • extended frequency range from 10 to 11 meters,
  • bright indication of the channel number,
  • increased power,
  • work in channel mode,
  • button for fast channel change.

There are, of course, downsides.

  • Very light tangent,
  • inconvenient PTT button,
  • hard wire of the headset,
  • flashing on emergency channels,
  • frequency grid offset.

Pros of the radio station

Now everything is in order. I'll start with austere design. If we proceed from the basic style of working with radio stations on the CIB range, then controlling the radio station consists only in choosing the channel number and that's it. The taxi service, which has been officially banned from using civilian radio stations, uses one channel to communicate with the dispatcher. Truckers also work in one channel and do not pay attention to the fact that there are 39 more channels on the CB band. Users of various ARCs also use one channel, and when leaving the city they switch to the truckers' channel. It turns out that all control of the radio station consists only in turning on and adjusting the volume. Of the radio station required for use, channel switching buttons, volume and possibly noise reduction are required. The radio station's tangent is also not overloaded with functionality, there is a PTT button and a microphone, and more is not required.

The tangent is fastened with a four-pin screw-retained connector. This is not a quick-release connection that many for some reason dream about, a good strong connection that is not subject to accidental popping and loosening. When using a radio station in a car, there is a great possibility of accidental falling out and disconnection of the PTT. Therefore, I would prefer a strong and reliable connection for the PTT wire. A quick-disconnect connection is suitable if you need to use a radio station as a base station.

The Vector VT-27 Comfort HP is designed to use 900 channels. Nice huh? And why are there so many channels? The radio station supports two frequency grids. EU is work in fives and rU is work in zeros. Ten grids from A to J. 45 channels each (with holes). As a result, we have 900 channels. Although officially, according to the documents, the overlapping frequency range is 26.965-27.855 MHz. To open a 900-channel station, grasp a soldering iron.

I also like the bright indication of the channel number with the use of seven-segment LED indicators. Unlike different panels, they do not have a problem with a poor viewing angle. Whatever one may say, the seven-segment player can be seen.

The Vector VT-27 Comfort HP has the ability to double the power output. From the factory, it operates at a power of 10 watts, which is more than double the permitted power. And after a little refinement, its power increases to 20 watts in FM and up to 16 watts in AM. The enlarged radiator allows you to work at higher capacities without worrying about cooling problems.

In this version of the radio station, the ability to work in channel mode is implemented. Certain channels are pre-registered and the radio station switches to channel mode. This is quite handy when you need to work with multiple channels rather than jumping through the 40 channels of an existing frequency grid. The frequency and modulation are memorized in the channel, therefore, almost all further manipulations will consist only in switching between the programmed channels. Ten channels can be programmed. It seems to be not so much, but it should be enough for everyday work.

The button for quickly changing channels is very pleased. It is programmed not only to change the channel number, but also to change the modulation characteristic of the selected channel. For example, frequency modulation is automatically set on channels 9 and 19, and amplitude modulation on channel 15. Do not think about the fact that you also need to change the modulation, I like automatism.

Cons of the radio station

One of the disadvantages of this radio station is that the PTT is not heavy enough. Most other PTTs carry a large amount of electronics and a weight inside, which gives it weight. And here inside there is a small scarf with a button and a microphone. Therefore, there is discomfort when you go through the tangents of different radio stations.

The push-to-talk button on the Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio has an awkward configuration. Previously, this version of the button implementation was convenient for me, but I began to often use push-to-talk switches from Alinco and Yaesu, and they use a different type of rocker for the PTT button. Now, for me, the PTT buttons have become more familiar as on these radio stations. In general, this is a subjective parameter.

The wire going to the PTT is very stiff compared to the same Alinco. In the cold it becomes very stiff and constantly strives to spring the tangent.

Another slightly annoying factor is the blinking of the channel indicator in quick access mode. When you press the button to quickly switch to emergency channels, the radio will indicate this by blinking the indicator. In some ways, this is the right decision, but in the car (when the radio station is installed somewhere on the side or under the seat) it will not even be noticeable.

The next disadvantage of the Vector is that its frequency grid is shifted one point up. And the generally accepted grid C turned into grid D. But this is a single problem that the user will encounter during the setup stage, and not during active operation. Actually, when setting up, I recommend everyone to print out the frequency table wired into the radio station with which you work. The fact is that such a grid shift is characteristic not only of Vector VT-27, but also of MegaJet, Alan and others.

Outcomes

A very good station, practically does not require modification. With a soldering iron, you will have to climb in three cases.

A soldering iron is needed in order to fix the grid in 900 channels.

A soldering iron is also needed to double the transmission power.

Well, a soldering iron may be required to improve modulation. Although it works quite well without interfering with a soldering iron.

(8) SQ squelch control / ASQ automatic squelch

The SQ control allows you to ensure the silent operation of the radio station for reception in the absence of a useful signal.

For the first time, the HP Vector Comfort CB radio has 2 squelch modes:

  • Manual (threshold, according to the background level of the radio broadcast), is set by the user independently. The threshold squelch allows you to provide the maximum adjustment range of the squelch, but cannot distinguish the useful signal from the radio noise. It is possible to suppress a weak signal of a wanted radio station.
  • Automatic (according to the spectrum of the radio signal), does not require adjustment. Can distinguish a useful signal (even a weak one) from radio noise (even a strong one) by the signal spectrum. Unlike the threshold squelch, it can isolate even a weak useful signal and suppress even a strong interference, thus providing more comfortable work.

To adjust the squelch:

(8) SQ knob / automatic squelch

The SQUELCH control allows you to ensure the silent operation of the Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio station for reception in the absence of a useful signal. For the first time in a CB radio station, 2 squelch modes are implemented:

  • Manual (threshold, according to the radio background level), user-configurable The threshold squelch allows you to provide the maximum range of squelch adjustment, but cannot distinguish the useful signal from the radio noise. It is required to set the level as accurately as possible, at which the background noise of the broadcast is not audible, but the useful signals are not suppressed.

  • Turn the SQ / ASQ knob clockwise until the air noise disappears. Try to set the level as accurately as possible, at which the background noise of the broadcast is not audible, but the useful signals are not suppressed.
  • Turn the SQ / ASQ knob counterclockwise (squelch open) to listen to weak signals.
  • Rotate the SQ / ASQ knob counterclockwise until it clicks to engage the automatic squelch.

(9) OFF / VOL control

  • Allows you to turn the radio power on and off, and adjust the volume level. If there is no signal in the receiving mode, it is recommended to open the squelch and adjust the required volume of the broadcast noise.

(10) MICROPHONE CONNECTOR

  • Connects to the supplied microphone. Connect a microphone to this jack and secure it with the retaining ring.

Scanning memory cells

1. To enable or disable the scanning mode, hold down the ▲ (Up) or ▼ (Down) button for 2-3 seconds. The direction of scanning (it can be changed during scanning) of memory cells (n1, n2, n3 ... or n0, n9, n8 ...) will be in accordance with the selected button. The presence of a dot after the memory location number means that the scan mode is on.

2. Briefly pressing the ▲ (Up) or ▼ (Down) button changes the scanning direction.

3. Scanning pauses momentarily on a busy channel (on which there is a received signal).

4. Scanning resumes automatically after 5 seconds if you have not stopped scanning manually or pressed the PTT button within 5 seconds.

5. If the signal disappears before 5 seconds have elapsed, then scanning resumes automatically, after 2-3 seconds. after the signal is lost.

6. You can manually resume scanning without waiting for a 5 second pause by shortly pressing the ▲ (Up) or ▼ (Down) button.

7. When you press the PTT button during scanning (or pause when receiving a signal during scanning, the "Dialogue" mode is activated, which pauses (but does not turn off!) The scanning mode.

The "Dialogue" mode has the following features:

  • scanning does not resume while you hold down the PTT button (transmitting)
  • scanning does not resume while there is a received signal (you are listening, for example, to the dispatcher)
  • scanning automatically resumes (the "Dialogue" mode is automatically completed) 10-12 seconds after releasing the PTT button or 10-12 seconds after the signal is lost
  • by short pressing of the ▲ (Up) or ▼ (Down) button, you can manually end the "Dialogue" mode and resume scanning
  • pressing and holding the ▲ (Up) or ▼ (Down) button for 2-3 seconds stops scanning

The "Dialogue" mode is convenient in the following cases:
Example 1: During scanning, a signal was detected on a channel such as n2. Scanning automatically pauses and you hear that you are called, for example, by the dispatcher. You press the PTT button and answer the call to the dispatcher. The "Dialogue" mode turns on automatically. You may not be afraid that the Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio station continue scanning after 5 seconds during the dispatcher's response (as in scanning mode) and you will not hear the answer. After the dispatcher's response ends, you are given 10-12 seconds (not 2-3 seconds as when scanning) to press the PTT (transmit) button and respond to the dispatcher. If the radio exchange is over and within 10-12 seconds, neither you have transmitted, nor the dispatcher has answered you, scanning will resume automatically. If you do not want the scanning to resume after 10-12 seconds, you can shortly before the end of the 10-12 seconds pause, shortly press the PTT button and thus extend the pause by another 10-12 seconds. Or stop scanning manually (see point 1. of the Scanning memory cells section)

Example 2: A signal was detected on a channel during scanning. Scanning is automatically paused for 5 seconds and you have heard useful information for yourself. You do not need to answer the call, but you do not want the Vector Comfort HP radio station to automatically continue scanning after 5 seconds and you will not hear useful information until the end. In order to pause scanning and listen to useful information to the end, briefly press the PTT button, scanning will be paused and the "Dialogue" mode will automatically turn on. In the "Dialogue" mode, you can safely listen to all the useful information to the end, without fear that scanning will automatically start after 5 seconds, while receiving useful information, and you will lose useful information Only AFTER the useful signal ends, scanning will resume automatically after 10-12 seconds ... At any time, you can resume scanning yourself by short pressing the ▲ (Up) or ▼ (Down) button.

8. Pressing the AM / FM button in scan mode stops scanning on the current channel and switches the modulation mode. Be careful!

9. Pressing the CH9 / CH19 / CH15 button in scan mode stops scanning and switches the station to one of the emergency information channels. Be careful!

Installation and connection of the radio station

Before installing the radio in your car, choose the most suitable place for this. The Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio station should be located in an easily accessible place, but not interfere with driving. Use the mounting bracket and the supplied accessories to mount the radio. The mounting bracket fasteners must be securely tightened to prevent the vehicle from vibrating loose while driving. The mounting bracket can be mounted above and below the radio station, it can be located at any angle convenient for you (under the dashboard or on the cab roof).

Installing the main unit

Before connecting the radio to the car's electrical system, make sure that the radio is powered off, the OFF / VOL knob (9) is turned fully counterclockwise (OFF position). The DC power cable of the VT-27 Comfort High Power radio station (13) is equipped with a fuse holder with a fuse along the positive (+) wire. Connect the DC power cable to the vehicle's electrical system. Despite the fact that the radio is provided with protection against connecting the power to the wrong polarity, pay attention to the correct connection. Connect the red wire to the positive (+) terminal and the black wire to the negative (-) terminal of the vehicle battery. Make sure that both wires at the terminals are in good contact and avoid accidental short circuits.

Antenna installation

A dedicated 27 MHz mobile antenna must be used. Antenna installation must be carried out by a service center or by appropriate technical personnel. Pay particular attention to the quality of the ground connection when installing the antenna. Before connecting the antenna to the radio station, it is necessary to check the performance of the antenna, having received a low (1.1 - 1.5) value of the standing wave ratio (SWR) using the appropriate devices. Otherwise, the output stage of the radio transmitter may be damaged. The antenna should be installed on the highest part of the vehicle body, as far as possible from various objects and sources of electrical and electromagnetic interference. The coaxial HF cable connecting the HP Comfort Vector radio station and the antenna should not be exposed to the risk of damage when laid inside the car. It is recommended to periodically check the correct operation of the antenna and measure the SWR standing wave ratio. Connect the RF coaxial cable from the antenna to the antenna jack (12) on the back of the radio.

Checking the operation of the radio

As soon as the Vector VT-27 Comfort HP radio station is connected to the vehicle electrical system and to the antenna, you can perform the procedure for checking its operability. Check the following:

(1) Make sure the power cable is connected correctly and the polarity is not reversed.

(2) Make sure the RF coaxial cable (from the antenna) is connected to the radio and the antenna itself is tuned correctly (the maximum allowed SWR is 2.0).

(3) Connect a microphone to the connector (10) on the front of the radio.

(4) Turn the SQ knob (8) clockwise to suppress air noise.
