    The second task, ensuring the interaction of software and hardware, takes on particular importance given the fact that modern computers are open to changes in their configuration. Application program interface (API) tools allow a developer to write a program on one computer with little doubt that it will work on another computer of the same type. Even if the memory or storage capacity of the two machines is different.

    The operating system arranges everything so that the application continues to run on this computer even after its hardware is modified or software updates are made. The fact is that it is the operating system, and not each specific application, that monitors the hardware and the distribution of its resources. The challenge for operating system designers is to make the system compatible with hardware from thousands of companies that make computer components and peripherals. A modern operating system is capable of "recognizing" thousands of different printers, hard drives, and special peripherals. Moreover, in each specific case, this equipment will be combined in a different way.

    Types of operating systems

    The vast array of operating systems in existence can be divided into four main types:

    1. Real-time operating systems (RTOS). Real-time operating systems are designed to control machinery, scientific instruments and industrial systems... Usually user interface such systems do not indulge in design delights, and utilities focused on the end user are absent. This is a ready-to-use "closed box". The most important task of this type of operating system is to ensure that a certain operation is performed at a certain period of time. And these segments were equal. In complex machines, their elements should not be allowed to move faster than necessary, since the system has "extra" resources. Or, conversely, did not move at all due to the system being busy
    2. Single-user, single task. As their name suggests, these operating systems are focused on one user performing one task at a time. A striking example of this type of system is the Palm OS for Palm handhelds. These devices enjoyed a certain popularity before the mass distribution of smartphones began.
    3. Single-user, multi-tasking operating systems. This type of system drives most of today's desktop and laptop computers. Both Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X are of this type. For example, a Windows user can simultaneously write a note in text editor and download the file from the Internet. At the same time, the printer can print, and the mail client can receive e-mail.
    4. Multi-user operating systems. Multi-user operating systems allow multiple users to access device resources at the same time. The operating system has to maintain a balance between the requirements of different users. In this case, the operating system has to make sure that each of the running programs has enough resources, and the task solved by one of the users does not interfere with other users. Unix, VMS, and mainframe operating systems like MVS are prime examples of multiuser systems.

    It is important to clarify some of the subtleties that can make it difficult to determine the type of operating system. There are multiuser operating systems and systems that support network connections. And these are different operating systems. For example, Windows 2000 and Novell Netware supported hundreds or even thousands of network connections. However, they cannot be considered truly multiplayer. The only real user of Windows 2000 and Netware is the system administrator. Network support and all remote user accounts are included in the overall operating system plan, programmatically defined by its administrator.

    Computer operating systems

    When you turn on the power of the computer, the first program to start is a set of instructions contained in the computer's read-only memory (ROM, ROM). This code tests the system hardware and makes sure everything is working correctly. This process is called power-on self test (POST). In its course, the processor, memory and basic input-output system (BSVV, BIOS) are checked for errors. Test results are stored in a special memory area. If the self-test is successful, the resident software starts. It is known as BIOS. This software starts activating the hard drives of the computer. On most modern computers, upon activation hard disk the first operating system snippet is located: the bootstrap loader.

    A boot loader is a small program that has only one function: load an operating system into memory. This will get you started. In general, the bootloader runs small driver programs that interact with and control various hardware subsystems. All of this resides in the same memory that contains the operating system itself, user information, and applications. A data structure is set in motion, containing a vast array of signals, indicators, and synchronizations that allow communication within and between subsystems and computer applications. Windows family of operating systems

It is one of the most popular PC operating systems today, created by Microsoft. As a historical reference, we note that at first the same company created the so-called Windows operating environment, which was essentially a graphical add-on over DOS. However, it contained some "open interfaces," that is, standard graphical tools that could be used to write other programs. This was quite convenient, and soon there were many applications that used the Windows operating environment. ■ In 1995, Windows evolved into a full-fledged operating system called Windows 95. Then came its "successors" - Windows 98 and Windows ME. Nevertheless, all these systems trace their "ancestry" to the DOS operating system. Each new version is backward compatible with more early versions... Windows has a flexible and nice graphical user interface built into the kernel of the system itself. In addition, during the existence of the Windows family, a very large number of programs have appeared that run under their control. Although Windows 95/98 / ME systems seem to have multitasking, that is, they can run several programs at the same time, we do not recommend to abuse this feature. This is especially true in relation to music, videos and graphics programs, since system resources in Windows 95/98 / ME, as a rule, are distributed among running programs inadequately to their requests. The consequence of this is usually a significant slowdown in the system, up to the inability to work in any of the running programs, as well as errors and abnormal terminations of some of them. In addition, an error and "freeze" of one of the programs can often cause the entire system to "hang", which means the loss of data in all programs running at that moment. ■ Because Windows was poorly resilient, Microsoft began developing a completely new operating system in 1993. This system did not use a DOS kernel - its kernel was rewritten using completely new technologies. From the phrase "new technologies" (New Technologies) the system got its name Windows NT. A graphical user interface was also built into the core of this system. Despite the fact that the outwardly Windows and Windows NT systems were very similar, and their names were almost the same, it was not possible to achieve compatibility between them. Often, programs written for Windows 95 or Windows 98, for example, could not run normally under Windows NT, and vice versa. but Windows creation NT was a big "step forward": this operating system is much more stable than Windows 95/98, it implements multitasking much better, etc. In this regard, Microsoft decided to achieve compatibility between the operating systems of both lines, after which stop the development of the line DOS - Windows 95 - Windows 98. The system has incorporated the best features of its predecessors. Linux operating system All operating systems of the Windows family are commercial products and have a fairly high price. However, in addition to using commercial operating systems, there are other solutions. This is how Linux has recently become popular, the undoubted advantage of which is that it is free. At the same time, the reliability of this system is not inferior to the Windows system, and many users claim that it even exceeds. In addition, if in the old days it was possible to say that Linux is inferior to Windows in terms of usability, now the situation has changed. Many users find, for example, the KDE graphical user interface used by Linux to be more user-friendly than the Windows graphical environment, although this is, of course, largely a matter of taste and habit. Linux OS usually comes in various distributions, each of which is fairly easy to install. These distributions can be downloaded for free from the Internet or purchased for little money on CDs. Unlike a Windows or DOS distribution, which usually contains only the operating system itself and a few simple programs like a calculator and a "notepad", the Linux distribution traditionally already contains professional office packages, powerful editing tools and many other programs. Therefore, such distributions usually take three or more CDs. One of the most common Linux distributions is the one previously released by Red Hat and now called Fedora Core (FC). At the end of 2003, the Fedora Core 1 distribution was released, which was the "successor" to the Red Hat Linux 9.0 distribution. ■ Another popular Linux distribution kit hqcht is called Mandrake. Traditionally, it is considered the most user-friendly. This distribution kit has a very convenient installer, as well as original graphical tools for setting up the operating system. At the time of this writing, the latest version of this distribution is version 10. Several Russian companies release Linux distributions aimed at Russian users. There are three most popular Russian distributions: ■ Linux XP, which is produced by Linux Online. This is the "youngest" of the Russian distributions, the first version of which was released in early 2004. Despite its "youth", it quickly gained popularity. The distribution kit includes many useful programs and well-implemented support for the Russian language; ■ ASP Linux is a Russian distribution with a rather long and successful history. Previously, the distributions of this company were called Black Cat Linux. Working with the command line is somewhat similar to working in DOS, but the set of possible commands in Linux is much larger, and the command line interpreter itself offers more flexibility. The Linux OS is very well organized multitasking. Here the user can run as many parallel processes as he wants, and they will act without interfering with each other. If one of the processes generates an error or "hangs", it can be forcibly terminated, and this will not affect other processes in any way. Other operating systems The operating system OS / 2 WARP (colloquially "semi-axis"), which was created and supported by IBM, has long been considered one of the best operating systems with a graphical user interface. She had a fairly user-friendly interface, good multitasking, and stability. For example, as in Linux, a bug in one program here, as a rule, was unable to stop the system. However, Linux is much more developed today, so home computer users practically do not use UNIX in their work. Sometimes it can be found, for example, on servers. The FreeBSD operating system is a free product. It resembles Linux, but it is organized in a slightly different way. FreeBSD is more commonly used with a command line interface, although it can also run a graphical environment such as KDE. Note that usually FreeBSD users "out of principle" prefer another environment - Vanilla, which is optimized for this particular operating system. On a FreeBSD system, you can also run programs intended for the Linux OS, if you first install a special compatibility module in it. In general, however, FreeBSD is much more difficult to install and configure than Linux or Windows, and is therefore much less commonly used. The BeOS operating system was created specifically to run various multimedia applications under its control: programs for multichannel music mixing, nonlinear video editing, etc. At first, it was a commercial product produced by the company under the short name Be. A new hardware platform was even developed for this system, but after a short time it was decided to develop the BeOS operating system for the existing PC hardware platform. In 1996, a version of this system was released called BeOS 5.0 Personal Edition, which was supplied free of charge. Parallel to this, a paid version of BeOS 5.0 Professional Edition appeared. Then the development of this OS was suspended due to its low popularity. However, in 2003 it turned out that the development had been sold to another company and a new version of this operating system, called Zeta, is scheduled to be released. The QNX operating system is a very expensive commercial product, but there are also free home versions of it. This system is a real-time operating system (RTOS), that is, its response time when executing applications is negligible compared to the time it takes to transmit user commands. QNX is very compact - it takes up little disk space and does not require a lot of space to run. However, today it is not very convenient to use, especially for unprepared users. Therefore, it can be found extremely rarely on home computers, and very few applications have been released for it. Sun's Solaris operating system is not intended for home users at all. The manufacturer of this commercial product is targeting it for use on large servers. Operating system Lindows OS. In fact, it is difficult to call it a separate OS, rather it is Linux with slightly changed settings, big amount original graphical system configuration utilities and included in the delivery tools for launching some programs written for Windows. However, these tools are often included in regular non-commercial Linux distributions. In addition, Lindows OS uses the original installer.
