xiaomi note 4 mobile phone. One-piece metal case

Introducing the Model Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 32GB, made in gray (Gray) with a built-in memory of 32GB.

Redmi Note 4- stylish smartphone with an all-metal body and a 2.5D glass front panel with slightly curved edges, and on the back cover there is a camera and a scanner for unlocking the smartphone with a fingerprint. The smartphone is based on a ten-core processor, which uses both high-speed and energy-saving components. In combination with the use of a modern graphics adapter, this allows you to find the optimal balance between system speed and minimum charge consumption in any situation.

Multimedia features

The device will surely appeal to gamers and connoisseurs of high-quality video. Its 5.5 inch screen is created using a high-tech IPS matrix. Due to this, its characteristics correspond to the parameters modern TVs and monitors - high brightness and contrast, 72% NTSC shades, viewing angles of 178 degrees vertically and horizontally.

Secure Access

The fingerprint scanner is used not only to unlock, but also to pay for purchases via the Internet. The owner can view private files in additional space and restrict access to children.

Wireless connection

Redmi Note 4 is equipped with dual SIM trays. The built-in 4G LTE module supports work in networks of the sixth category with throughput up to 300 Mbps and can be used for highly detailed human voice transmission (VoLTE function). The dual-band Wi-Fi a/c adapter provides high-speed Internet access, and also allows you to broadcast the image on the TV screen via a wireless channel.

Maximum convenience

The proprietary shell of the MIUI operating system allows you to create two profiles for different users and switch to a simplified interface with instant access to important functions. In addition, it provides features such as touch screen operation with one hand and the use of a smartphone as a remote control for multimedia technology.

Realistic shots

The 13-megapixel main camera can capture clear and high-contrast photos in all conditions thanks to the use of a dual-tone LED flash and a high-speed phase-detection autofocus system. HDR features available to the user, voice control shooting, panoramas, auto image enhancement and manual setting. The 5 MP front camera is capable of taking high-quality selfies in low light due to large aperture optics.

Xiaomi never ceases to delight users with the release of new smartphones that, in terms of functionality and technical equipment, are able to compete with their counterparts from more famous manufacturers. Moreover, in some aspects, the brand models are completely superior to competitors by an order of magnitude. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is no exception - a device that offers an excellent balance of performance, features and a very modest price tag.

Design and ergonomics

The smartphone is available in three colors. External performance is typical for most modern models, the location of control components and communications does not stand out against the general background - the manufacturer did not come up with anything new, preferring proven solutions.

The size of the device is not the most impressive, it fits comfortably in the hand. The case is made of hardened aluminum, and its weight is 175 g - an average figure, which allows both men and women to use the phone equally comfortably.

The assembly of the redmi note 4 of the xiaomi brand is not satisfactory, the material does not creak even with strong pressure, the case is durable and has thick walls. The edges along the perimeter have an original polishing, the overall format leaves a generally pleasant impression. Does not leave the feeling that in the hand is a solid device made of quality materials and accessories, which belongs to the premium segment.

Display

The device has a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1080. The matrix format is IPS, the density value is within 401 ppi. The surface is able to withstand up to 10 touches at a time, which is quite convenient when working. The protective glass has a 2.5D format and is covered with an oleophobic layer, which eliminates problems with fingerprints.

The display quality is top notch. The screen is bright, with rich colors, the picture pleases with contrast, clarity and detail. Excellent viewing is guaranteed even in the sun, the viewing angles are quite large and produce a picture without distortion.

The manufacturer offers a number of software settings, thanks to which you can adjust the color temperature value to suit your needs, activate the protective mode for reading, and much more. I am also pleased with the possibility of programming the “Reading Mode” for activation under certain conditions.

Software part

The software component of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is represented by a typical combination of Android and the manufacturer's proprietary shell. We are talking about Android 6.0. and MIUI v8 - a combination that is appreciated by consumers.

Users can flexibly customize the system and its appearance to your needs, although there are minor flaws, they are quickly eliminated thanks to constant updates, which makes general functioning device more reliable and trouble-free.

Google services are presented in full, what is missing can be downloaded from the Play Market without any problems and efforts.

Device in operation

The latest 10-core processor with a frequency of 2.1 GHz is responsible for the performance of the device. Compared to its predecessor, performance indicators have increased by about 60%.

Graphics processing is at the mercy of the accelerator with 4 cores Mali-T880. Memory - operational and integrated, is represented by two combinations. The user can choose from models with 2/16 and 3/64 GB of RAM and flash memory, respectively. Installing a memory card is optional - either it or the second SIM card.

A smartphone is able to solve any of the tasks assigned to it. And we are talking not only about working applications - the device also demonstrates its high level when processing multimedia content. Games run smoothly and effortlessly, and videos, including 720p and 1080p, play great.

It is worth noting the work of the fingerprint sensor. Fingerprint recognition takes less than a second, and the duration of the process does not depend on the angle of application of the finger. The initial scan requires 5-7 touches - this is enough to completely fix the print.

Speaking of communications, it is worth noting that almost everything that may be required for work is available here. The only exception is the lack of an NFC module. There is also an IR port, which is a rarity today.

sound

The sound of the smartphone is presented at a very high level. The signal is clear, it has sufficient volume, a clear study of frequencies, although there is no particular bass saturation. But in general, the sound pleases, not only when listening directly, but also through headphones.

The sensitivity of the FM radio is good, the microphones work clearly and without defects during voice recording - the noise reduction system works just fine.

Camera

This model has two cameras - 13 and 5 megapixels. The main module is characterized by fast autofocus and the presence of a dual-type LED-based flash. The set of settings is standard - nothing special is offered in this aspect. It is possible to shoot in automatic or manual format, there are several creative modes, which opens up additional features and allows you to fully express your imagination.

The focus of the front camera is fixed, there is no flash, the pictures are quite good in quality. And for video communication, the camera's capabilities are more than enough. There is a face recognition option, the shooting process itself can be carried out using the side volume control.

The maximum video resolution is 1080p. The video sequence is quite high-quality, although it has its own characteristics, which is due to the lack of an optical stabilization system. The sound track perfectly complements the picture, there are no noises, the acoustics are clear.

autonomy

The capacity of the battery pack is 4100 mAh, which is enough for continuous operation for 5 hours with a significant load. In normal mode, a day of work is guaranteed - with phone calls, games, a working navigator and more. Charging does not take much time - you can fully "fill" the device in just 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Advantages of the model and its disadvantages

Among the main advantages, special attention deserves:
  • Large screen with excellent resolution;
  • Optimal balance between body and screen;
  • Capacious battery pack;
  • Ability to use two SIM cards;
  • All required sensors and communications are available;
  • WiFi mode with AC support.
Of the shortcomings, the following cannot be ignored:
  • Combining a slot for a second SIM with a memory card;
  • Lack of an NFC module;
  • Battery not removable.

For people who are going to upgrade their gadget, it is worth studying the specifications and then buying Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. Young Chinese Xiaomi company Inc wins the benevolence of customers with decent quality and low cost. The main principle of the manufacturer is that the basic functions of a smartphone should correspond to the line of flagship products.

What is the reason for the popularity of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4?

The impression of the smartphone is a solid model, which with a slight stretch can be attributed to the line of more expensive products. The following criteria contribute to this:

  1. Durability: when you try to bend the aluminum case of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, nothing happens.
  2. Practicality: in addition to gold, there are two options for a non-marking case: dark gray and black.
  3. Compact and lightweight: the weight of the model is 175 g.
  4. Comfort: Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is conveniently located in the palm of your hand, the control buttons are backlit, there is Bluetooth 4.2.

A significant advantage is the build quality. She is characterized by:

  • thoroughness of docking connectors with the grooves of the housing;
  • lack of play in sliding elements, for example, a tray;
  • there is no creaking or other unusual sounds: all components of the structure are securely fixed in place.

The design of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is in line with modern trends: rounded corners, an elongated rectangle shape, the traditional arrangement of cameras and control buttons.

Advantages of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone

An important advantage - the model looks expensive. This impression is created by the 5.5” display with Full HD image quality. The screen is protected by glass with rounded edges (2.5D glass). The undoubted advantage is the low cost. The price of Xiaomi Note 4 is about $200.

All these advantages are inherent only in the original models of smartphones, which are recommended to be bought from official representatives. In this case, the buyer gets rid of the troubles associated with performance, durability and warranty.

Heed the advice: have time to please yourself with a solid smartphone until Xiaomi Inc has moved to the top flagship league. The brand has all the prerequisites to rise up.

Not so long ago, Xiaomi launched a modification of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone, which is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal flash memory. Please note that this is an international model intended for sale outside of China. It's not based on a MediaTek chipset that didn't perform well in last year's original model, but on a Qualcomm processor. Looking ahead, we’ll say right away that the difference between these smartphones based on two chipsets and with each amount of RAM is simply colossal.

By the way, at the bottom of the package, information about a specific modification is written in small print, that is, in this case, Redmi Note 4 with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM in black. To the right is information about the production date - April 2017. it was at this time that the first modifications of this mobile device with an increased amount of RAM entered the market.

Inside the package, you can find the smartphone itself, on the front of which there is a matte protective film, a branded black 2A (5W) power adapter, a clip to open the SIM card tray, a black MicroUSB cable for recharging and synchronizing with a computer, as well as a warranty voucher and very brief instructions. There is nothing else in the box.

First impressions and build quality

Always fun to keep new smartphone in hand, especially if it is a Xiaomi product. The thing is that this company has never skimped on the quality of materials and build quality. Yes, marriage of course can be, but this is one case in a million. Moreover, the probability of meeting a defective iPhone is much higher than even a budget smartphone under the Xiaomi brand.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone has quite impressive dimensions, but the reason for this is a large 5.5-inch screen, which is covered with 2.5D glass. The body of the mobile device is made of metal, but there are plastic parts on the top and bottom of the back cover, under which there are antenna modules.

Let's say right away that such a solution, judging by the operating experience, made it possible to improve the quality of reception, since in places with a poor signal level this device confidently holds 2-3 antenna sticks, while the iPhone SE or iPhone 7 only one.

On the back there is a single camera, covered with a scratch-resistant protective glass, a dual LED flash and a fingerprint scanner. On its lower part there is a corporate logo of the manufacturing company, as well as a glued sticker with information about the model number and place of production. It can be easily peeled off without any marks on the case.

The front of the mobile device boasts a large 5.5-inch display with small side frames. Directly below it are three touch buttons that are designed to navigate the Android operating system. Above the screen is a speaker front-camera, proximity and light sensors, and an LED indicator that glows in different colors depending on events.

At the bottom of the metal case of Redmi Note 4 there is a MicroUSB connector, as well as holes for the speaker and microphone. The top of the mobile device has the familiar 3.5mm audio jack, another microphone, and an infrared (IR) port that can be used to control home appliances and electronics. The right end housed the volume rocker and the power/lock button. On the left side of the case there is only a slot for two SIM cards, or one SIM card and one MicroSD memory card with a capacity of up to 128 GB.

The body of the smartphone is assembled very well. Nowhere does not creak or play. All parts are perfectly fitted to each other, so you can put a solid ten for the build quality. As for the first impression of the smartphone, it is positive. The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand, thanks to the rounded 2.5D glass and rounded edges of the case.

Operating system MIUI 8

When you turn on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone for the first time, all its owners are greeted by the MIUI 8 operating system, which, as mentioned earlier, is global, so Russian, Ukrainian and hundreds of other languages \u200b\u200bare already present in it. In other words, no additional problems with flashing and updates - all updates will arrive "over the air".

You can talk about the merits of MIUI 8 indefinitely, but we will try to fit all the main facts about this operating system in a few paragraphs. The owner of the iPhone will definitely like it much more than naked Android. The thing is that in the classic OS from google list installed apps and desktops are two completely independent things, while in iOS 10 it's all combined into one.

The MIUI 8 system is built on the same principle, that is, there is no list of programs - there are only desktops that display icons of all installed software. You can also place any widgets there.

The appearance of the MIUI 8 software add-on does not cause discomfort and the desire to replace it with something else. For example, you want to immediately change the Samsung UI shell in the Galaxy S8 to some Nova Launcher, but most likely it depends on personal preferences.

The MIUI 8 operating system pleasantly surprises with its beauty, minimalism and simplicity. Owners of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone can configure everything at their discretion, spending a minimum of time on this. This is certainly encouraging, as most Android smartphones suffer from the complex customization malaise that causes thousands of people to end up switching to iPhones.

I would like to believe that the MIUI operating system will continue to develop in this direction and further, becoming every year more convenient, faster and more functional. By the way, yes, fans of firmware will be pleased with a huge range of custom operating systems, among which there are Cyanogen Mod assemblies. This smartphone is a real dream for Android fans.

Screen

After using the smartphone for some time, we can draw conclusions about its IPS-screen, which has a large margin of brightness. Thanks to the latter, information from the screen can be read even in bright daylight. This can be especially true in the summer, when it is daylight outside most of the time.

The saturation and contrast of the Redmi Note 4 screen does not cause any complaints. A matrix with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (Full HD) perfectly transmits the picture without any distortion, and the human eye is not able to see individual pixels on it. At minimum brightness, information from the screen is comfortable to read even in complete darkness.

Viewing angles, a weakness of many budget Xiaomi smartphones, are at a high level in the Redmi Note 4. If you look at the screen of a mobile device from any of the five sides, the picture will continue to be as rich and juicy. Speaking about the screen of this smartphone, we can take the iPhone 6s Plus as an example. In our opinion, they are comparable in all respects, with the exception of one.

The fact is that all Xiaomi budget smartphones, costing less than $300, do not have a good anti-glare coating, so the picture can be almost unreadable in direct sunlight. In more expensive mobile devices ah, anti-glare coating has long been used to solve this problem, so I would like to see it in the next generation of all smartphones from the Redmi line.

If you evaluate the smartphone screen on a ten-point scale among all IPS matrices, then you can safely put it 9 out of 10. One point was removed due to the lack of this very anti-glare coating.

Performance

Modifications of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone based on the MediaTek chipset turned out to be a failure, even despite the attempts of the Chinese corporation to correct the situation with updates. Many processors from this manufacturer actively overheat under heavy load, as a result of which their performance drops significantly. This process is called throttling.

The smartphone model with 4 GB of RAM and based on the 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor that came to our review has not been confirmed to have such an ailment. Moreover, getting this mobile device to warm up properly is not an easy task. Obviously, the chipset from the American corporation is much better, more stable and more reliable. It generates less heat, requires less energy and is even slightly more productive. Until MediaTek learns how to make normal chipsets, I would not like to see its products in future Xiaomi smartphones, as this may mean new problems.

Of course, the Snapdragon 625 chipset is far from the most powerful in the world, but its performance is more than enough to perform all basic tasks. You can play GTA San Andreas, World of Tanks Blitz or Minecraft on medium settings with a native resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (Full HD). Due to the fact that this modification is equipped with 4 GB of RAM, the smartphone can simultaneously keep about two dozen “light” programs open, such as a calculator, mail, instant messenger, etc.

However, it is worth noting that the MIUI 8 operating system has built-in settings designed to automatically unload applications from memory that are not used for a period of time. This is very convenient, especially for a novice user, since the automation in the system will not allow you to quickly discharge the battery. These settings can be adjusted to your needs by visiting the section in the settings called "Energy Saving".

Installing exactly 4 GB of RAM made it possible to make a premium middle-class device out of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone. The device confidently performs all everyday tasks, and in a web browser Google Chrome About 25-30 deposits can be opened at a time and all of them will be in RAM at that moment. The indicator is good, because even the iPhone 7 can not do this.

Of course, if possible, then you should buy Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 in a modification with 4 GB of RAM. The price difference is not so big as to waste additional power, which will definitely come in handy someday. In addition, in this case, the amount of internal memory will increase to 64 GB, and, as you know, there is never too much of it.

cameras

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone with 4 GB of RAM boasts a 13 MP main camera that can record video in 1080p resolution. It has an f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual LED flash. The MIUI 8 operating system has a built-in proprietary Camera application, with which you can manually set many parameters for shooting.

Photo examples:

There are a huge variety of modes here - "Enhancement", "Voice", "Tilt-shift", "Timer", "Alignment", "Scene", "Panorama", "Control" and even " Night mode". All of them, in fact, allow you to achieve certain effects or use some functions.

The main camera takes good photos in good and medium lighting conditions, but as soon as the light source disappears somewhere, the quality of the pictures immediately drops noticeably. The same can be said about video recording - the worse the light level, the lower the detail.

Note that if the lighting is good, and the object is nearby, then the photo on the main camera of Redmi Note 4 will turn out to be very good in quality. There is even blurring of the background, which is usually only characteristic of expensive mobile devices, or models with a dual camera.

The front camera of the smartphone has a 5 megapixel resolution with f / 2.0 aperture and support for video recording in 1080p. It does not have enough stars from the sky, but it can still provide good selfies. Of course, there can be no talk of any high detail even in medium lighting, but it will fit perfectly for posting pictures on Instagram or social networks.

The MIUI 8 operating system has a built-in feature that allows you to select one of several photo filters and superimpose it on a photo at the time of shooting. The function is certainly extremely useful and convenient.

All photos in original quality are available.

Battery

This smartphone is equipped with a 4100 mAh rechargeable battery that supports fast charging at 2A/5V speed. As you can see, its capacity is large enough, but it is still not enough to provide two working days without recharging. This is due to the large 5.5-inch IPS screen, which consumes a large amount of electricity at maximum brightness.

Overnight, with activated cellular network (one SIM card), connected to Wi-Fi and an activated Bluetooth module, the Redmi Note 4 smartphone loses about 3-5% of the battery charge. This is a good indicator, which can be significantly reduced by transferring the mobile device to airplane mode during sleep.

If speak about everyday use, then the device lasts approximately 7-9 hours of screen operation at medium brightness. Again, this is a very impressive indicator that will allow you to refuse to recharge your smartphone throughout the entire working day. Until the end of the second smartphone may no longer hold out, but if you activate the power saving mode built into MIUI firmware 8, then he definitely can.

As a result, the smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 on the Snapdragon 625 processor can be given 9 points out of 10 possible for autonomy. Still, I would like the battery life to be enough for 2 full working days, like the Redmi 4X smartphone. This could be achieved by installing not an IPS matrix, but an OLED. This solution will reduce the energy consumption of the screen, but increase the cost of the entire smartphone.

cellular

Smartphone Redmi Note 4 in the international modification (Global Version) works fine in all networks fourth generation LTE 4G in Russia. The device supports HD-calls, which provide high quality of the transmitted sound. The microphones do their job well - they record sound perfectly, and with the help of additional microphones on the case, almost all external noise is cut off, be it the noise from a passing train, the roar from the engine or a powerful wind.

The device has a slot for installing two SIM cards, or one SIM card and one MicroSD memory card up to 128 GB inclusive. When using two SIM cards, only one of them can work in the fourth generation LTE 4G network. At the same time, both of them can simultaneously work in 2G and 3G networks, which is especially important for remote areas located far from large cities.

There are no complaints about the quality of reception of a cellular network signal to a smartphone. It catches 3G and 4G LTE networks even where the iPhone 7 or iPhone SE cannot. This is definitely a big plus, which for many people can be a determining factor when choosing a smartphone.

Features that pleased

In this mobile device, it was not without some features that were really very pleasing. The first among those was the infrared port, with which you can control household appliances. All settings are made through the Mi Remote application pre-installed on the smartphone. This is convenient when, instead of several remotes from the set-top box, TV and music center it is only one, and it is a smartphone that is always and everywhere at hand.

As we mentioned earlier, right above the screen of the smartphone is a very small LED light bulb. It can glow in different colors, as well as fast or slow blinking. So, for example, sitting at a computer, you can immediately understand that someone called the phone, or an important notification has arrived - all this is configured within the MIUI 8 operating system. If someone basic settings seems small, you can always install third-party extensions from Google Play, which will allow you to customize every detail to your liking.

The fingerprint scanner located on the back cover is surprisingly fast. Moreover, it works even when the smartphone is in deep sleep. It is enough to put a finger on the scanner, as the device will be instantly unlocked and ready to go. Not all smartphones have this functionality. As an example, let's take the iPhone 7, which requires you to first activate the screen, and only then unlock the device using Touch ID.

It is very pleasant that the Redmi Note 4 smartphone supports the ability to "hot" swap SIM cards and MicroSD memory cards. This is extremely convenient, especially when you need to regularly rearrange operator cards. The device, after each such operation, does not need to be rebooted - everything starts working immediately and almost instantly. For comparison, the flagship Galaxy S8, for 54,990 rubles, has to be rebooted after each such operation, which is very annoying.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone is a one-of-a-kind device for those buyers who want to buy an advanced mobile device for all occasions. It's versatile in every way, from performance to battery life. The presence of slots for SIM-cards and a MicroSD memory card allows you to use it with two cellular operators at once, or expand the memory up to 128 GB, to which you can then download hundreds of games, programs, movies and TV shows. If we correlate all the pros and cons, then the first will be much more.

  • Advanced fingerprint scanner
  • Clear OS MIUI 8
  • Excellent IPS screen with good viewing angles
  • Good 2G/3G/4G signal reception

You can buy a Redmi Note 4 smartphone in several versions, the top one being the version with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM. It costs a little more than the rest, but the overpayment is worth it. Additional RAM and permanent memory will never be superfluous, especially since the performance and speed of the MIUI 8 operating system depends on the first.

5.5-inch 10-core model with metal case

The Chinese company Xiaomi has released the Redmi Note 4 model, presenting it almost simultaneously with the new flagship Redmi Pro. The modification can be said to be passable, it will be quite difficult for it to compete with the quickly hit Redmi Note 3 Pro. At the same time, with her release, she also strained some of the users who not so long ago managed to acquire the previous Redmi Note 3 model, and now the update has already been released. In general, the manufacturer has produced so many models this season that it is time to talk about internal competition between Xiaomi products. True, at this point it is worth noting that not all of them are officially intended for the international market, even despite the availability of global firmware for them. This is exactly the hero of today's review: unlike Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 4 is produced exclusively for the domestic market, the model is not even presented among the company's products, although Redmi Note 3 is there.

In any case, we will not now indulge in analytical discussions about the actions of the manufacturer in the face of fierce competition, and even in its own market, but simply proceed to detailed study all new features. Users will decide for themselves whether to buy Redmi Note 4 or wait for the next update, because these updates from Xiaomi are now coming out at such an alarming rate...

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone comes in a small box made of matte hard cardboard, designed in the style familiar to the company's latest products. And yes, this is not the same industrial style of yellowish oiled paper that the manufacturer used a couple of years ago. Now Xiaomi seems to have finally lost interest in it.

The smallest possible set was placed in a small box. The smartphone itself barely fit there, a miniature Charger with a maximum output current of 2 A at a voltage of 5 V, connecting cable and key for ejecting cards.

Appearance and usability

The appearance of Xiaomi smartphones with each new model getting better and better. The plastic has finally disappeared, the metal has become even more. Now there are not even plastic inserts, the whole body is all-metal (unibody), and the antennas are laid in external thin grooves covered with a composite material.

The shape of the case is classic, it is a little less streamlined and more angular than most of today's generally recognized beauties, since there are clearly defined flat side edges. Due to their sharp edges, the smartphone is more securely held in the hand, and a strong one-piece body does not allow the device to emit the slightest creak.

The smartphone has a large 5.5-inch screen, but it fits quite comfortably in the hand due to the overall dimensions of the case, which, apparently, managed to reduce the weight and overall thickness of the profile through the use of more durable materials. The metal surface is matte, but not so rough that one can speak about the reliability of holding in the fingers - the device can be quite slippery.

The back part is habitually given over to the camera module with a flash and a fingerprint scanner. The camera module does not protrude beyond the surface of the case, the device lies steadily on the table and does not sway when touching the screen. The camera is equipped with a LED flash of two multi-colored LEDs, the flash is very bright. The fingerprint sensor clearly fulfills touches, works quickly and accurately, there are no complaints about it.

The front panel of the smartphone is covered with a 2.5D screen with sloping edges, which is now fashionable among manufacturers. Although for a case that does not look streamlined from all sides, this does not play a special role. The front panel has an LED event indicator, the touch buttons under the screen are illuminated. The color of the front panel varies depending on the overall color of the case: it can be white or black.

The card tray is inserted into the smartphone from the side, it is hybrid, has two slots for Micro-SIM, Nano-SIM and microSD cards, and microSD card can be inserted instead of Nano-SIM. It is worth noting a very useful little thing associated with the use of adapters: the Nano-SIM in the “frame” fits comfortably into the place of the Micro-SIM, since there is a tray on one side of the tray, and this whole structure does not fall out anywhere. Supported hot swap kart.

The power and volume buttons are installed on the opposite side face, the keys are quite elastic, have a harsh stroke, and are easily groped blindly. The location of the buttons does not cause dissatisfaction, everything is in order with this.

Universal Micro-USB connector located at the bottom supports connection external devices v USB mode OTG. For some reason, Xiaomi will not come to a single standard in any way, installing either Micro-USB or Type-C in different models. The connector is surrounded by two grilles, but only behind one of them is the speaker hidden, the sound does not come out through the second.

A 3.5 mm mini-jack on the top is adjacent to an infrared transmitter that emulates a remote control. You can also see a small hole in the second, auxiliary microphone for the noise reduction system.

The device is available in light and dark versions: in the case of golden and light gray colors, the front panel has White color, and in the dark gray version it is black. In this case, the colors carry only a taste load, since the metal of the case in all variants remains practical matte, which does not collect dirt and fingerprints.

Screen

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is equipped with touch screen IPS with dimensions 68×121 mm. Diagonal - 5.5 inches, resolution - 1920 × 1080 pixels, dot density is approximately 401 ppi. The frame on the sides is thinner than the average, only about 3 mm, because of this, the device is well placed in the hand. Its body is not as wide as, for example, the same 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

The display brightness can be manually adjusted or automatically adjusted based on the operation of the ambient light sensor. The AnTuTu test diagnoses support for 10 simultaneous multitouch touches. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is adequately locked and unlocked using the proximity sensor. Implemented the function of turning the display on and off by tapping on the glass.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is only slightly lighter (brightness in photos is 112 versus 111 for Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the screen of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. There is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen (even better than the Nexus 7 in terms of efficiency), so fingerprints are removed much more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

At manual control brightness and when displaying a white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 400 cd / m², the minimum was 0.8 cd / m². The maximum brightness is not very high, but given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker slot). V automatic mode as the ambient light conditions change, the brightness of the screen both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness slider. If it is at 100%, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 100 cd / m² (too much), in an office lit by artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets it to 300 cd / m² (too much), in a very bright environment ( corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) the brightness increases to 400 cd / m² (to the maximum - it is necessary); if the adjustment is about 50%, then the values are as follows: 9, 170 and 400 cd / m² (suitable values), the regulator at 0% is 0.8, 30 and 400 cd / m² (the first two values are underestimated). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately and to some extent allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. A white field is perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

And a test picture:

The colors on the screen of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 are slightly oversaturated, the color balance of the Nexus 7 and the tested screen is slightly different. Photo taken after profile selection standard in screen settings:

In the other two profiles, the saturation is even higher, which is achieved by increasing the color contrast, without changing the coordinates of the primary colors.

Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, but on Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to strong black highlighting.

And the white box:

The brightness at an angle at the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed) and decreased approximately equally. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly, but remains conditionally neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is good, although not ideal. The backlight shows through the white frame slightly:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1070:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 18ms (10ms on + 8ms off). The transition between 25% and 75% grayscale (according to the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 28 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.18, which is close to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power dependence:

We did not find the presence of dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image, which is very good.

Color gamut close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, the colors have more or less natural saturation and hue. More or less, since a slight increase in color contrast takes place. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, as the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is mostly below 10, which is considered acceptable for a consumer device. At the same time, both parameters change little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In this device only when profile is selected Automatic contrast it is possible to adjust the color balance using the warm-standard-cool tint switch (see screenshot above), however, the reduction in color temperature required in this case (option Warm) leads to an increase in ΔE, so it makes little sense to perform a correction.

To summarize: the screen has a fairly high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. Also, the advantages of the screen include the presence of an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, high contrast and a color gamut close to sRGB. The disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. In addition, we did not like some overestimation of the color contrast. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

The sound of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 can be described as satisfactory. To sound an incoming call, the available features are quite enough - the sound is loud and clear. However, there is no bright saturation in it, the frequency spectrum is limited mainly to high ones, there are no deep basses either in the main speaker or in the headphones. In general, the sound is clear, but unpretentious - perhaps enough for a two hundred dollar smartphone, but it could be better.

There are no special complaints about the spoken speaker and microphone, the sound is muffled, but clear and legible. Interlocutors on the other side also do not notice noticeable problems with sound during telephone conversations.

FM radio is standard on the smartphone. The sensitivity of the microphones when recording on a voice recorder is not satisfactory, the speaker's voice is recorded clearly, and the noise reduction system copes with noise.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with two modules digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 5 megapixels. The front module has a lens with a maximum aperture of f / 2.0, the focus is fixed, there is no own flash. The quality is quite good for the level of a selfie, sharpness and color reproduction are normal, although the detail, of course, is good only for self-portraits. As standard for Xiaomi selfie cameras, there is a face recognition function with age and gender detection, you can shoot using the side volume key.

The main camera received a 13-megapixel sensor and an f / 2.0 aperture lens, fast phase detection autofocus and dual bright LED flash. As usual, there is no choice of resolution in specific numbers, you can only set high, medium or low quality, as well as adjust the brightness, sharpness and contrast. V manual mode ISO settings (up to 1600) and white balance are added. Among the additional shooting modes you can find panoramic, night, decorations, as well as audio notes mode and others. It is impossible to transfer control of camera settings to third-party applications using the Camera2 API, and there is no possibility of recording to RAW either.

The camera can shoot video at a maximum resolution of 1080p, does not support shooting at 60 fps and 4K. There is no electronic stabilization function, so shooting on the go is jerky. The camera copes with video recording in an average way: the picture is not quite clear, the image is loose, although the video sequence during static shooting is smooth, without jerks and artifacts, the sound is also recorded more or less acceptable. The noise reduction system is available, and it copes with its tasks tolerably.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Apple iPhone 6 Plus

It’s hard to call a good camera, especially for a Xiaomi device. The abundance of residual noise and blur zones does not allow us to consider it seriously. On the other hand, in good light, it produces a good result, so it will certainly cope with documentary shooting.

Telephone part and communications

The network capabilities of Xiaomi smartphones intended for the domestic market often do not fully meet the requirements of Russian users, since they do not support the LTE 800 MHz frequency (Band 20), which is better than others for indoor communications, as well as in sparsely populated areas. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was no exception: the device can operate in five LTE FDD bands (Band 1/3/5/7/8), but does not support the Band 20 band. In practice, in the Moscow region, the smartphone confidently registered and worked in 4G networks . The quality of signal reception does not cause any particular complaints, the device confidently maintains communication indoors and does not lose the signal in areas of uncertain reception. Full list The frequency bands supported by the smartphone are as follows:

  • GSM B2/B3/B8; CDMA 2000/1X BC0
  • WCDMA B1/B2/B5/B8; TD-SCDMA B34/B39
  • FDD-LTE B1/B3/B5/B7/B8; TD-LTE B38/B39/B40/B41

The smartphone supports the standard wireless communication Wi-Fi 802.11ac and of course two Wi-Fi range- 2.4 and 5 GHz. There is support Bluetooth version 4.2 and two satellite navigation systems - GPS and Glonass, without the Chinese Beidou. There are no complaints about the speed of the navigation module, the first satellites are detected during a cold start within the first tens of seconds. There is a built-in magnetic field sensor. There is no NFC support in the smartphone.

Built on the basis of the new Mediatek Helio X20 chipset, the device supports simultaneous operation of both SIM-cards in 3G networks. This is especially true for subscribers of those telecom operators that cover only 3G / 4G bands without 2G support - the same Tele 2, for example. Everyone knows that if you do not choose such a SIM card as the main one for data transfer in 3G / 4G, then it simply ceases to be available, since the card in one of the slots can only work in 2G. Here, the Tele 2 SIM card always remains available in 3G, even if another card is selected for data transfer, which is convenient.

We are talking, of course, about the features of the standby mode, since work with two SIM-cards is organized according to the familiar Dual standard. SIM Dual Standby, when both cards can be in active standby mode, but cannot work at the same time - there is only one radio module here. For voice or data communication, you can assign a specific card in advance or select it directly during the connection. The standard keyboard does not support the Russian language and stroke input, so you will have to install a normal keyboard yourself after purchase.

OS and software

The device uses software platform Google Android version 6.0 with its own MIUI 8.0 shell installed. The capabilities of MIUI are well known to those who like to install customized interfaces on their smartphones. In any case, you will have to tinker with this device, if only because the Chinese version never preinstalls Google Apps, including the necessary store Apps Play store. Of course, knowledge of the English language is also required.

The interface is drawn nicely: in the eighth version of the shell, many of the external components were redesigned, including fonts. There are even more changeable wallpapers in the carousel of pictures - although they mostly depict slender Chinese boys and girls in various poses. There are also more useful updates: the calculator, for example, has become more functional, it has several additional operating modes to choose from. In the photo gallery, you can work directly with pictures by overlaying stickers, sound, and your own captions. Even more attention has been paid to protection, now you can even protect your own notes with a password.

Gestures, as usual, are few supported in MIUI. But there is a multifunctional virtual button with a quick call to the necessary functions, which can be attached anywhere on the screen. Naturally, there is no separate section for applications in the launcher, all icons are distributed across desktops, folder creation is supported. Additional programs not so much, among them a compass, a QR scanner, a remote control, FM radio, office suite, a utility for working with a second account, etc. Some programs are intended only for the Chinese market. But the app store Play store with a small amount of effort, you can install it yourself, and then there will be no problems with the programs.

Performance

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 hardware platform is based on the top-end MediaTek MT6797 platform - the 10-core SoC Helio X20. This is a 64-bit processor with 4 Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.4GHz, 4 more Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.85GHz, and 2 more Cortex-A72 cores running at up to 2.3GHz . True, in this case, the upper frequency is limited to the bar of 2.1 GHz, the SoC version MT6797M is used. The ARM Mali T880 graphics chip and 2 or 3 GB of RAM, depending on the modification, are also responsible for the speed of the device. The amount of built-in flash memory is 16 or 64 GB, it is possible to expand it with microSD cards.

Based on the test results, it can be noted once again that MediaTek's flagship SoCs are generally quite far from the leading Samsung Exynos 8890 Octa and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 in terms of capabilities. maximum 69K points, while, for example, Doogee F7 Pro on a full-fledged MT6797 gave out 89K in the same test. In terms of graphics, the video accelerator is even more inferior to the leaders, and this is noticeable in the results of all benchmarks.

Nevertheless, at the moment, the capabilities of such a platform are enough for any purpose, including demanding games. Unpretentious "Tanks" go to high, although not maximum fps, in heavier games with demanding graphics, the video accelerator also manages so far, although in Dead Trigger 2 there were still slight slowdowns.

Testing in the latest versions of AnTuTu and GeekBench comprehensive benchmarks:

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, so many worthy and actual models- due to the fact that they once passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions test programs.

Graphics subsystem testing in 3DMark, GFXBenchmark, and Bonsai Benchmark gaming benchmarks:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them depend significantly on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can only be truly correct on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

thermal images

Below is a thermal image of the back surface taken after 10 minutes of running the GFXBenchmark battery test:

It can be seen that the heating is more localized in the upper part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was only 35 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), which is relatively little.

Video playback

To test "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and accessibility, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, you should not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a table.

According to the test results, the test subject was not equipped with all the necessary decoders that are needed for the full playback of most of the most common multimedia files on the network, in this case, sound ones. To successfully play them, you will have to resort to the help of a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, it also needs to change the settings and manually install additional custom codecs, because now this player does not officially support the AC3 audio format.

Format container, video, sound MX Video Player Regular video player

BDRip 1080p MKV, H.264 1920×1080, 24fps, AC3 video plays fine, no sound video plays fine, no sound

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output frames of video files with different parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

Ratings, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems associated with the playback of the respective files.

According to the frame output criterion, the quality of video files playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The screen refresh rate is about 61 Hz, so when outputting files with 60 frames / s, one frame per second is displayed longer than the others, and for files with other frame rates, ideal smoothness is no longer possible. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in its original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235: all gradations of shades are displayed in the shadows and in the highlights.

Battery Life

The non-removable battery installed in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has more than a decent capacity of 4100 mAh. But, as is usually the case with Chinese smartphones on MediaTek, a large battery does not necessarily mean a high level of autonomy. In the case of the hero of our review, the autonomy turned out to be far from a record, everything here is at an average level, not higher.

Testing has traditionally been conducted at normal power levels without using power saving modes, although they are here, and they can even be manually adjusted to suit your own needs.

Continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) with auto scrolling lasted up to 12 hours until the battery was completely discharged, and with continuous video viewing in high quality(720p) with the same brightness level through home network Wi-Fi device can withstand 10 hours. In the 3D gaming mode, the smartphone functioned for about 4 hours. It is charged from a regular network adapter Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 for almost 2.5 hours with a current of 1.8 A at a voltage of 5.3 V. Wireless charger not supported.

Outcome

About $ 210 or even a little more, sellers in foreign online stores are now asking for one who visited us today for testing Xiaomi model Redmi Note 4 in the older version, that is, with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of flash memory. Russian resellers offer this device, which, of course, does not have official certification, at about the same price - about 13 thousand rubles. Most likely, when buying from them, you won’t have to mess around with firmware and installing the Play Store, they will install everything you need themselves. But even in this case, the device will not be perfectly localized, some of the settings will remain in English. However, such trifles have not frightened the enthusiasts who have made Xiaomi their favorite brand for a long time. And there are many of them in Russia. The novelty is not so cheap by Xiaomi standards, especially against the background of the models already presented earlier, for example, the same Redmi Note 3 Pro, which has become popular and is now sold at a price of about $180. True, on the side of Redmi Note 4, according to the manufacturer, there is a more top-end SoC MT Helio X20, while the aforementioned Redmi Note 3 Pro has “only” a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650. But in fact, it is still unknown which is better.

In any case, on Xiaomi flagship Redmi Note 4 does not pull even with the top MediaTek platform, the model differs from its predecessors, but not too much. Probably, we should expect a price reduction for this device soon. A good and good screen, cameras, sound, communication capabilities, the level of autonomy, the presence of a fingerprint scanner - all this has already been, the novelty has not brought any special improvements. For example, I would like to finally see in all Xiaomi smartphones wider support for the LTE frequency bands used by Russian operators, as well as the presence of NFC - this is at least. The smartphone is certainly not bad, but our hero, oddly enough, could not offer more than other products of the manufacturer.
