Design, color and light

The 16GB model comes in one color only. The black front panel and the silver back are a clear reference to the previous generation of "touch". There is no such combination among the 32GB versions, and in vain.

At one time, I was somewhat dissatisfied with the cover material of the new player. This is metal, but any colors on it look very peculiar, "for an amateur". In this case, we are talking about a silver back panel - and this color is much better associated with metal. This means that the impressions of the case were better than before.

To highlight the new color scheme, Apple made matte and black "apple" and the word "iPod" on the lid. In my opinion, this is even better, but this is a subjective moment.

The lack of a camera and loop mechanism has radically redesigned the back panel. No extra circles, except for the plastic "window" for the Wi-Fi chip. In this format, the iPod looks a lot like a smaller iPad, which is ironic.

Who would have thought that a camera module could ever interfere with someone. The problem with the fifth "wheelbarrow" is that the bezel of the camera rises a lot above the body. And so every time you put the player somewhere, it will lean against the camera at a slight, odd angle. And naturally wholly it will not lie on the table.

There is no module here, which means there is no problem either. Such is the unexpected plus.

The abandonment of the camera resulted in the relocation of the microphone location. Previously, it was placed on the back, next to the flash. In the 16GB model, it sits on the top edge of the player. A couple of "battle" tests have shown that the recording quality has not changed. And the location itself is even more convenient than before: now you can record anything by placing the player on the table with the screen facing up. A similar system is implemented in the iPad, and, in an amicable way, it should have been in the iPod for so long.

The color of the buttons has been brought in line with the palette of previous generations of players. I mean, now they are all black. And plastic. They are almost invisible neither from the back nor from the front.

Probably, this is the most minimalist device from Apple over the past few years: there is too little something remarkable in its appearance. This has its own charm ...

Otherwise, everything is the same. The display is identical to that of the iPhone 5. Moreover, it is identical in all respects and without compromise: viewing angles, brightness, contrast, and so on completely coincide. The speaker in the device is very sad, from the category of "buzzer" - it can try to wake up in the morning, beep with alerts and timidly play music. It is not enough for a serious sound, which is quite expected - the spare part is installed here easier than in the iPhone, because there was too little space for a normal speaker.

Front-camera, albeit HD, produces a mediocre picture, worthy for video conferencing and calls. In this case it is the only one camera and, in order not to upset users, Apple did not remove the Camera application from the system. Using it to shoot anything other than yourself is very inconvenient and strange. And it’s pointless, I guess. You can't see the viewfinder. If you buy an iPod for Instagram, this model is out of the way with this model.

About iOS performance - and iOS 7

I am afraid that in this part of the review I will not be able to surprise the prepared reader with anything at all. Everything will be predictable, expected and quite obvious to yourself. I considered it my duty to check everything to the last detail - what if Apple somewhere quietly cheated and installed a weaker piece of hardware? But no, Apple actually took the finished product - the iPod touch 5 - and threw out a couple of ribbon cables.

The popular belief is that the company's philosophy does not imply the release of "cheap", simplified versions of its products. Tim Cook once talked about this, clearly forgetting about the iPod touch. Relatively recently, in 2009, Apple began selling a special modification of the third generation of players - 8 gigabytes. His stuffing is almost from the old "tachey" of 2008, but it was written only in the bins of technical specifications. In fact, the company decided to sell the "old" twice.

In the fifth reincarnation, this story, to no small joy, did not repeat itself.

16GB iPod touch 5 has an A5 processor and 512MB random access memory... Exactly the same characteristics sported a regular iPod touch of the fifth generation. Thanks to the session, we know for sure: significant differences in terms of components between the 32GB and 16GB versions absolutely not.

This means that the performance of the "budget" iPod touch is no worse than that of the "full" version. And this is noticeable. iOS 6.1.3 works without a single a hint of lag. Apps open instantly, lists and sites scroll smoothly, games fly, and so on. 512 MB of RAM is still enough for all ordinary tasks, modern mobile games and applications from App Store... And it will take another year and a half to start thinking about updating. And that is far from obligatory.

I'm sure you've already noticed that iOS 7 is installed on the photos on the touch. I decided to take a chance and, for the sake of interest, test the latest beta version at that time. The result was pretty predictable. We were talking about the second build of the system, which worked well only on the iPhone 5. Of course, the system slowed down, lagged, and applications kept crashing themselves. It makes no sense to blame the hardware of the device for this: the final version will work on the player several times better.

However, iOS 7 looks like organically on such a thin device with a minimalistic back panel. Returning to 6.1.3 was sad and joyful at the same time. The symbiosis of the new system design (with the exception of the icons) with the case design is almost perfect. In the end, everything is very simple: there is no need to worry about the performance of the "wheelbarrow". He cope.

conclusions

What is a "budget player" by Apple standards? Less memory is the only real difference between the 32GB and 16GB versions. All differences in the literal sense of the word lie on the surface. This iPod touch has no camera, no Loop, and comes in only one color.

The irony is that these things were not initially needed by everyone. The camera has been and remains a highly controversial design element in the fifth generation of Apple players. Many of us always have a smartphone in our pocket or bag with a more or less acceptable - or even much more powerful - camera. The second lens is unlikely to come in handy. The 16-gigabyte iPod touch has nothing at least partly superfluous. And because of this, it looks much better - especially from the back, not to mention the shiny rim of the case. There are no compromises on battery or screen either. At the same time, he can do everything that the older model processor is capable of. And since its benefits are not obvious, why pay more?

Apple has released new generations of its players and communicators, which seem to have quite decent cameras. But are they still camera replacements or real cameras? What is 6 millimeters? It's like taking an already super thin iPhone 5 and filing another 1.5 millimeters off the back of it with a file. The comparison is, of course, a bad one, but in reality it is incredibly problematic to convey this graceful sophistication. Just hold it in your hand.

Strap

Apple innovation and revolution! They are noticeable and felt in many apple solutions, but not in this strap.

Yes, it's thin yet very durable, fits nicely on the wrist, attaches very cool to the iPod with a pop-up button that works like a fountain pen, BUT! Can you imagine yourself walking somewhere with an iPod dangling from your arm? Complete nonsense.

Conveniently pulling it out of your pocket? It is still possible (there are no buttons on the headphones), but to wear it like this ... thank you.

EarPods with disabilities

In my opinion, this is kopeck and there is no justification for such a strategy.

I liked the feature with the button on the back, these things are very lacking in the iPhone 5 - there would be no talk about the secondary design. In the lower part there is a button hidden in the case; if you press it, it comes out of the groove. You can attach a strap from the kit to it, it matches the color of the case, in this case, red. Made of a strange material, it resembles both rubber and leather at the same time. The button is needed in order to secure the loop. The strap is moderately long, so you don't have to worry that someone will grab the player if you are reading on the subway. Finally we got rid of the shiny back surface, which quickly gets covered with scratches. So, this thing looks really cool. And it's nice to pick it up. And show. From the clever packaging to the smallest detail, it is completely different from the iPod Touch of previous generations. Fingerprints are visible on the display, but in a couple of days with back nothing terrible happened - let the shiny cover go into oblivion. The speaker at the bottom isn't very loud or as loud as the iPhone 5, but it might be enough if you consider listening to music while you're in the bathroom.

Naturally, there is a microphone in the body of the player, so you can communicate via Skype or Facetime without a headset. I tried both functions, everything works fine.

I want to note one more thing. Previous Models were similar to the iPhone 3G, while the fifth generation iPod Touch is very different, much like the iPhone 4 was different from other iPhones. Is it good? Of course. Over the course of use, I have come across several times that the player is mistaken for the iPhone 5, especially when it is lying on the table with the display up.

It has the same display as the iPhone 5, 4-inch, Retina, 1136 x 640 pixels, very nice blacks, great viewing angles. I will not repeat the praises from the review of the "five", I will only say that the iPod Touch stands out among other players, and stands out very strongly. It should be noted one more thing, for once the current iPod Touch and iPhone have the same displays. This is a step in the right direction.

The claimed battery life is about 40 hours in music playback mode and 8 hours in video playback mode. There is a "fast" charging function, using a USB cable, in two hours you get 80% of the charge, a full charge will take about four hours. With the operating time here is complete order, unlike the iPhone 5, the player does not seem to sit down at all, even with Wi-Fi turned on.

Performance

Inside the Apple A5 processor, like in the iPhone 4S, the player, when working with a number of applications, is not as fast as the iPhone 5. Only in this company portable devices have such a profile, it does not differ in speed, but it does not greatly torment the battery. Memory

There are two modifications, 32 and 64 GB, in the video I am wrong when I talk about 16 GB. Although it is strange that the company did not begin to make such a version - I think it would be in great demand.

Sound quality

For the player, this is an important point, as many believe. So many people write on the forums. So many say to friends. But in my opinion, sales of previous generations of iPod Touch have nothing to do with how this player sounds. Users vote with their money for those things where both price-quality and function with design are successfully combined. The sound cannot be touched. Can't show to friends. Mossy audiophiles can pass greasy headphones connected to a player to each other - they say, check out the scene (or whatever). How many people like that? Dozens? Hundreds? Great, but when equipment is produced in huge quantities, the opinion of the minority is simply not taken into account. For audiophiles, Touch, and any other Apple technology, is not of interest in terms of sound. There is nothing tube here. The sound of the iPod Touch is similar to that of the iPhone 5, and the sound of the iPhone 5 is the standard of all smartphones. If you use ALAC, play with the equalizer, then you can achieve excellent results - for a universal gadget, called a player only for marketing reasons. The volume level is very high, the bass is good, there are no substrates, everything is clean and tidy, it is pleasant to listen to. However, in normal stores you can try the Touch yourself with your headphones - if you replace the EarPods with something larger like the Aiaiai TMA-1, then the sound in no way disappoints. On the contrary, it is surprising. Earlier I said that everything is fine in Apple devices, but the sound is better in Walkman, now I won't say that. Rather, the opposite is true.

Accordingly, everything is more than fine with the sound here.

In Russia, the player is about to appear in official retail, in the US the version with 32 GB of memory costs $ 299, 64 GB - $ 399. Acceptable? In my opinion, yes. The only drawback is the lack of EarPods with a remote control and a microphone in the package. It seems to me that this gadget is clearly not even intended for owners of other Apple devices, but in order to attract a new audience. Let's say those gentlemen and ladies who adore Android, but do not mind having an iOS device in their household. For example, to use programs for this OS, or communicate using iMessage. Or he wants the iPhone 5, but without a phone, in fact, the iPod Touch is. It's hard to say what to do with it and how to do it. Because there are thousands of application scenarios. The display makes it easy to watch movies. Good quality sound - let's not forget that the iPod is, first of all, a player. Huge selection of programs. Communication in social networks... Reading is also a good feature, especially considering that the fifth generation Touch has a long battery life (forty hours of audio playback, very good). A wonderful feature with a button and straps, I think it will be especially appreciated in Tokyo (and in Japan in general). A good camera for a player, these shots can be safely saved on a computer. It's a pity that the iPhone 4S camera was not installed here. But this does not disappoint me personally. There is no room in my pocket for an iPod Touch. There is an iPhone 5 for such tasks. But I can safely recommend this device to you, Apple dodged, but made a real candy out of the player - and the player, after all, is more and more difficult to call a gadget. One word, Touch.

P.S. It is gratifying that the Classic has not gone anywhere from the iPod line. And no memory was added, and the design was not changed. It's time already, it's high time.
