RAM: gigabytes, types, speed and other subtleties. How much RAM do you need for normal computer operation? 3 gb operational

To expand lineup smartphone manufacturers use different methods, ranging from a wide selection of body colors and materials of the back panel and ending with different amounts of internal memory. Recently, another option has been added to this list - a different amount of RAM. If everything is clear with the built-in memory - there is simply more of it, then with the operational memory everything is not so simple. The increased volume allows not only to keep in memory large quantity running programs, but has a noticeably different performance. In this comparison, we illustrated the difference between 2 GB and 3 GB of RAM, and answered the question - is it worth paying extra 500 hryvnia for an LG G3 smartphone with 32 GB of storage.

Both tested devices work in ART environment on the same software version - V10a-EUR

The difference is $ 41. A 16 GB memory card will cost you 120 UAH (~ $ 10). It may seem that it is more profitable to take a smartphone with 16 GB of storage and purchase a memory card with the same amount of memory for it. For all this, you will spend 8120 UAH ($ 773), having received a smartphone with 32 GB of ROM. Is it so? No. Starting from Android 4.4.2, the operating system does not allow using the memory card for storing data from third-party applications, only standard ones: gallery, file manager etc. For games and other similar content, 10.1 GB is allocated - this is the amount of memory available to the user of a smartphone with 16 GB of storage. There are ways to get around this limitation, but for this you need to obtain superuser rights, that is, do not be afraid of difficulties and be ready to spend time reading the forums. As a result, with the help of various tricks and free time, you can still save about UAH 380 ($ 31).

When smartphones are turned on, the amount of free RAM for the 16 GB and 32 GB versions is 847 MB and 1700 MB, and the volume of the built-in storage is 10.1 GB and 24.7 GB, respectively.

Now let's look at the other side of the coin - the amount of RAM and how it affects the performance of a smartphone. To do this, we suggest taking a look at the table below with the results of eight popular benchmarks. Data for LG G3 with 2GB is taken from.

Higher results are marked in red

As you can see, the difference in performance turned out to be quite noticeable. It is curious that in the Quadrant application we did not manage to achieve the same high results as in the 2 GB version. We could not figure out the reason for such a big difference.

Outcomes

With the benchmark results and data on the amount of free RAM and permanent memory, you can make a decision - is the 32 GB version of the LG G3 worth paying extra 500 UAH for it? In our opinion, it is definitely worth it. Firstly, with 24 GB of permanent memory, you don't have to worry about it running out soon (movies, TV shows, music can be stored on a memory card). Secondly, the 3 GB version has fewer problems with the smoothness of the interface, which is affected by twice the amount of available RAM. Thirdly, the older model demonstrates noticeably better performance results.

In early March, Vivo introduced RAM - now this figure is considered the flagship. Top Apple phones equipped with 2 GB of RAM, Samsung- 4 GB of RAM. Colleagues from the company decided to find out how much RAM is actually enough for the average user in 2016.

The experiment is based on personal feelings and (partially) on benchmark tables, all conclusions are subjective. Below are seven options for the amount of RAM available in modern smartphones.

512 megabytes

Blossoming time: 2011

The bestmodel: iPhone 4S, Nokia Lumia 520

This volume was considered top-end for Android five years ago. The iPhone 4 and 4S received the same amount of RAM, and the latter survived to this day - probably the update to iOS 9 was the last for it. Concerning Windows Phone, then the 512-megabyte Lumia 520 has left the brightest mark in history: in January of this year, it occupied 12.9 percent of all WP-devices.

Alas, 512 MB are now officially obsolete. With this volume, only budget Android smartphones v price range from three to seven thousand rubles. Naturally, no updates to Android 5.1 (and even more so - 6.0) are expected. Applications will slow down, and the cache will have to be constantly cleaned. The only acceptable option is to purchase a smartphone as a spare, not load it with applications and use it as a touch “dialer”.

1 gigabyte

Heyday: year 2012

The best model: iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, Samsung A-Line, Microsoft Lumia 535

Using a gigabyte of RAM as an example, a deep conclusion can be drawn: Apple knows how to optimize a mobile OS for the amount of RAM, while Google does it with difficulty. Android devices had gigabytes of flagship four years ago, but in iOS everything is different - even now, more or less relevant iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus work flawlessly with a tiny (by Google standards) amount of RAM.

At Microsoft, everything is contradictory. On the one hand, top-end devices have long received much more RAM, on the other hand, mid-range and budget smartphones function perfectly with a gigabyte. Updates on latest versions OS are supported too.

The current Android also finally made friends with such a volume: there are enough devices on the market with a gigabyte of RAM and 5.1 Lollipop preinstalled.

The main disadvantage is that applications run in the background. For example, if on iPhone 6 you watched a movie in the browser, then paused it and scanned social networks, the next time you enter the browser, the page with the movie will reload, and you will have to rewind to the point where you left off. In other mobile operating systems, everything is the same.

1.5 gigabytes

Blossoming time: 2013-2014 years

Best gadgets: LG G4s, Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016)

A compromise option that Asian companies have come up with for their mini flagships. Charging about $ 300-400 for a device with a gigabyte is a shame, but installing two gigabytes is expensive (and pointless if the main flagship has the same amount).

Accordingly, one and a half gigabytes help: the cache can be cleaned a little less often, the interface will work smoother, but you will not notice any revolution in comparison with a gigabyte - heavy content will continue to "fly out" in standby mode.

2 gigabytes

Heyday: 2013-2014 years

Best gadgets: iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, LG Nexus 5, Nokia Lumia 930

For Android, all flagships switched to this volume in 2013, for Microsoft in 2014, and for Apple in 2015. Objectively, two gigabytes of RAM is enough for almost all needs - from watching super-quality video to games weighing 1.5-2 GB. The best proof of the versatility of 2GB of RAM is the iPhone 6s Plus, which is in the benchmarks.

Of course, the main role in this victory was played by the A9 chip (80% more powerful than the A8), but two gigabytes do not bother a bit: the menu does not twitch or slow down, everything opens smoothly, and "heavy" content is paused without excesses ( with subsequent renewal). The same story with the Lumia 930, which was developed already at the end of 2013: no freezes, no pauses in work. With Android, things are a little worse (sometimes the smartphone responds to touches with a tiny delay), but even the Nexus 5, which turns three in the fall, is still quite suitable for demanding users.

3 gigabytes

Heyday: 2014-2015 years

Top Models: Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4, Htc one M9, Microsoft Lumia 950

In 2014, the smartphone industry was overtaken by a genre crisis: vendors got confused about which parameter should be improved, so they rushed to "pump" all the characteristics. Naturally, gigabytes of RAM have also been used up, which now does not seem to be superfluous - with such a volume, flagships (and not only flagships) are protected from interruptions in the interface for a long time.

Microsoft has only two devices with 3 GB of RAM - 950 and 950 XL. Most likely, they would have functioned remarkably well with two gigabytes, but Redmond was reinsured and added a "fashionable" amount of RAM. Apple is likely to mutate up to three gigabytes this fall when the iPhone 7 is released, but there is no confirmation of this information: no one will be surprised if Cupertino retains two gigabytes, and the seventh iPhone again becomes the champion of benchmark tests.

4 gigabytes

Blossoming time: 2016 year

The best model: Samsung Galaxy S7, Meizu Pro 5, LG V10

This volume is enough to forget the phrase "smartphone RAM" at least until the end of next year. True, there is a nuance: sometimes other characteristics do not keep up with the RAM - then the owner of the gadget will be very disappointed.

For example, in 2015, ASUS ZenFone 2 was released in a modification with 4 GB of RAM, but that device did not become a hit: users complained about a weak battery, dim screen backlighting and a fragile cover (although the new cover costs around 500 rubles).

By and large, there is no particular difference between three and four gigabytes of RAM, so this criterion should by no means be decisive when choosing a smartphone.

6 gigabytes

Blossoming time: 2016 year

The best model: Vivo Xplay 5 Ultimate Edition, Meizu Pro 6 (in the future)

In the past year or two, Chinese companies have come to love the headline tactic with the world's first products. For example, in June, the world's first smartphone with a 10-core processor was presented, but probably no one will remember the name of that gadget.

Perhaps the same fate awaits the Vivo Xplay 5 Ultimate Edition. This smartphone has a metal body, 5.43-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1400 pixels, Gorilla Glass 4, Snapdragon 820 processor, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of internal memory, 16-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel front module and battery with a capacity of 3600 mAh.

The next smartphone with 6 GB of RAM will most likely be the Meizu Pro 6. In addition to the impressive amount of RAM, it will receive a Full HD screen and a processor Samsung Exynos 8890. Why the generous Chinese put as much as six gigabytes of RAM in the case is a huge mystery.

People often ask the question: why, out of four (six or eight) gigabytes of RAM installed in a computer, only 2.23 (3.25 or 2.87, etc.) are available? Listed below possible reasons incomplete definition of RAM.

Why the computer does not see part of the RAM

1. A 32-bit operating system is installed.

Any 32-bit OS will "see" no more than 4 GB of RAM. More often - from 3.15 to 3.5 GB. And here it is not so important whether it is XP or "eight". This is due to the specifics of the allocation of the memory address space. Accordingly, in order not to get into such a situation, you need use 64-bit Windows.

2. The computer uses an integrated video adapter

Part of the RAM for its own needs can be "cut off" by an integrated (or "built-in") video card. This is very common in laptops. This situation is normal. And if the amount of remaining RAM is not enough for you, there is only one advice: increase its volume by adding or replacing modules.

It is also important to understand here that:

  • different integrated video adapters take different amounts of RAM;
  • the same video card is capable of taking up different amounts of memory, depending on the amount of RAM installed in the computer. Let's say, when there was 2 GB of RAM, the video card took 512MB. And when they installed 4GB, the graphics began to cut off 1GB.
  • there are hybrid video adapters that have their own memory, but are also able to expand it by borrowing memory from RAM.

Because of these two reasons, it is sometimes difficult to understand why exactly this amount of RAM is available. After all, it may turn out that out of 6 installed gigabytes, 32-bit Windows “saw” 3.25 GB, and the video card “cut off” another 512MB from this volume. As a result, 6GB will be written in the system properties (2.73 available). The solution to this combined problem is again replacing the operating system with a 64-bit one and, if necessary, increasing the RAM.

3. OS edition restrictions on the maximum amount of RAM

Younger editions of Windows 7 and Vista have limitations on the use of RAM. For example, Windows 7 Starter only works with 2GB of RAM, Home Basic x64 with 8GB, and Home Extended x64 with 16GB. Naturally, in this case, the only way out will be to install another edition of the operating system (for example, Pro).

4. Some of the memory modules are faulty or there is no contact

Turn off your computer. Unplug the power cord from the desktop PC, or remove the battery from the laptop. Press the power button several times to drain the charge from the capacitors.

Remove all memory modules, clean their contacts with an eraser, then clean them with alcohol. Reinstall the planks and check if they are all detected by the system. It is convenient to do this in free program CPU-Z. Go to the SPD tab. On the left side of the window there is a drop-down list that displays information about the installed RAM bars in each slot:

If empty fields are displayed when you select a certain slot, it means either there is no module in it, or it does not work.

5. Modules are installed incorrectly

In some models of motherboards, some of the slots may not work until the priority slots are occupied. Therefore, such nuances should be clarified in the manual for motherboard(on the manufacturer's website or in the brochure).

6. The problem of compatibility of RAM modules

Test the bars separately using Memtest86 + ().

If each module independently works correctly (it is determined in the system, its volume is displayed correctly, there are no errors in the tests), and when installing several together one is not detected, then there is a problem of the compatibility of the strips with each other. To avoid this, try to install exactly the same modules ().

conclusions

Once again about the most important thing. In order for the operating system to use the RAM to the maximum, it is recommended to install 64-bit Windows OS editions such as Professional. When it comes to modern operating systems (Windows 7, 8.1 and 10), there is no problem installing the 64-bit version. And if you have a choice, feel free to choose just this option.

But XP x86 and XP x64 are actually different systems with different versions kernels. And Windows XP 64 bit edition is considered quite unstable. Therefore, it is recommended to either install Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 (if the computer is designed to work with one of them), or leave XP 32 bit.

Smartphone Le Eco Le 2

One big and significant difference between LeEco and its "Chinese" competitors is a high-quality product that does not require additional firmware or other devices to bring the device to normal operating condition.
  1. Completion and design. Metal case does not have intricate details, this gives a kind of guarantee that it will go out of fashion later than competing smartphones with a catchy design. The most that such a durable Le Eco Le 2 may need is a silicone case, which is already included in the kit. The Le 2 measures 151x74.2x7.5 mm and weighs 153 g.
  2. Display touchscreen size 68x121 mm, diagonal 5.5 inches, display resolution 1920x1080 pixels. Color reproduction is natural, the maximum brightness level is 430 / 3cd / m2. The brightness, of course, cannot be called a record, but this is close to ideal, given the price niche this device... Four color profiles will satisfy everyone. The special grease-repellent coating of the screen reliably protects it from prints.
  3. Performance. Le Eco Le 2 is equipped with a very successful Snapdragon 652 processor, 8 cores (4x Cortex-A53 1.4 GHz plus 4x Cortex-A72 1.8 GHz). Competitors from one price category with the same processor it does not. Operating system Android 6.0, proprietary shell EUI 5.8. Not quite the usual option, but also interesting. RAM is 3GB and permanent, built-in memory is 32GB. But there are no slots for microSD memory cards. This is compensated by the ability to connect to OTG mode external flash drives via USB port.
  4. Multimedia. Smartphone Le Eco Le 2 produces smooth, clear sound from both the speaker and headphones. And in case you want to change the sound to your liking, you can do it in the equalizer. The recording made on the dictaphone does not have extraneous, noise impurities, the recording quality is high. There is no standard headphone jack, only with a USB-C adapter or Bluetooth. Today there are many such headphones, there is plenty to choose from. Video excellent quality, two cameras: the main one is 16 megapixels, the maximum resolution is 4608x3456, two-way flash. The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, a wide-angle lens of 76.5 °, there is no flash, the quality of the pictures taken is normal.
  5. Autonomy. The Le 2 has a 3000mAh non-removable battery. The charge is enough for a day, most likely by the evening it will need to be supplied to recharge. But here Le Eco provides an excellent opportunity to fully charge the battery in an hour and a half using Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
  6. Interface. Smartphone Le 2 carries out wireless communication, via Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b / g / n / ac), 4G network (LTE Cat.7), 3G, Bluetooth 4.1.
  7. Additionally. Le Eco Le 2 gives "amenities" in the form of a paid subscription to all books, films and music, as well as the availability of warranty service in Russia.
The price of Le Eco Le 2 in Russia is 15,000 rubles. Below is a detailed video review of this device:

There is no difference in design from previous Xiaomi devices, except for the curved lid. The case is made of aluminum with diamond-cut edges. There is a fingerprint scanner on the back. Redmi Note 4 comes in three colors: gold, gray and silver. The size of this candy bar is 151x76x8.4 mm and weighs 175 grams.
  2. Display Redmi Note 4 is more than good for its price. The diagonal is 5.5 inches, the resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, the type of matrix is IPS, protective glass, oleophobic coating. The colors are very rich, the brightness is automatically adjusted, and the color reproduction itself is natural. Viewing angles are close to maximum. The use of this device on a sunny day is available due to the brightness range.
